Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols

Description: Manages Snapshot routing configuration for on-demand DDR connections that activate routing updates only when dialing.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SNAPSHOT-MIB?

CISCO-SNAPSHOT-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB (part of the ciscoMgmt tree) that models Snapshot Routing, a feature that lets Dial-on-Demand Routing (DDR) interfaces exchange periodic routing updates only during brief active windows and then freeze the learned routes for a longer quiet period. It exposes configuration through ciscoSnapshotInterfaceTable (ciscoSnapshotClient, ciscoSnapshotDialer, ciscoSnapshotActiveInterval, ciscoSnapshotQuietInterval, ciscoSnapshotRowStatus) and real-time state through ciscoSnapshotActivityTable (ciscoSnapshotActivityState, ciscoSnapshotActivityTimer, ciscoSnapshotExchangeTimer, ciscoSnapshotProtocolsExchanged). Monitoring these objects is useful for confirming that a client interface correctly cycles between active, quiet, and transition states and that route exchanges are actually completing within the configured active interval, rather than falling back to stale frozen routes. It depends on standard interface indexing (InterfaceIndex from IF-MIB) and is deployed on Cisco routers using dial-up or ISDN backup links to remote branch offices; network engineers can download the CISCO-SNAPSHOT-MIB file for use in their SNMP tooling.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SNAPSHOT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers with dial-on-demand routing (DDR) interfaces
  • Cisco IOS routers (legacy Snapshot Routing feature)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls ciscoSnapshotActivityTable for a branch-office DDR interface, checking ciscoSnapshotActivityState and ciscoSnapshotExchangeTimer; if the state is stuck in limbo or transitionToActive and ciscoSnapshotExchangeTimer stays near zero across active cycles, that indicates routing updates aren't being exchanged and the interface is relying on stale frozen routes.

What Can Be Monitored

  • snapshot client/server role per interface
  • active/quiet/retry interval configuration
  • current snapshot activity state
  • route-exchange timer during active periods
  • per-protocol exchange bitmap
  • row status of snapshot-enabled interfaces
