What Is CISCO-FRAME-RELAY-MIB?
CISCO-FRAME-RELAY-MIB is a Cisco proprietary MIB providing management objects for Frame Relay WAN interfaces on Cisco routers, covering the Local Management Interface (LMI) protocol used between a Frame Relay DTE and the service-provider network as well as per-circuit configuration objects. It exposes LMI link status and type, counts of LMI status-enquiry and status messages sent/received, and counters for LMI update-status exchanges and timeouts, alongside a separate group of Frame Relay circuit objects. Its monitoring purpose centers on WAN link operational health: administrators track cfrLmiLinkstatus to confirm the Frame Relay link is up and correctly signaling, and watch LMI timeout counters to detect keepalive failures that typically precede or explain a Frame Relay circuit going down. As a legacy WAN technology MIB it is a Cisco-specific implementation for Cisco IOS Frame Relay interfaces rather than a direct dependency of other standard MIBs. It is deployed on older Cisco routers still running Frame Relay WAN links, common in legacy enterprise branch connectivity before migration to MPLS/Ethernet WAN. Engineers can download the CISCO-FRAME-RELAY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples
A WAN operations team would poll cfrLmiTable/cfrLmiEntry to check cfrLmiLinkstatus and cfrLmiLinkType on a serial interface, confirming the Frame Relay LMI protocol is correctly negotiated. Tracking cfrLmiStatusIns/cfrLmiStatusOuts alongside cfrLmiStatusTimeouts over time would reveal intermittent LMI keepalive loss, a leading indicator of an unreliable carrier circuit before a full outage occurs. The cfrLmiEnquiryIns/cfrLmiEnquiryOuts counters help confirm the polling cadence between router and Frame Relay switch is functioning as configured.
