Description: Manages virtual partitioning of physical line card modules into logical instances on Cisco modular platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-MODULE-VIRTUALIZATION-MIB?

CISCO-MODULE-VIRTUALIZATION-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB for modular routing and switching platforms that lets a single physical line card module be partitioned into multiple logical virtual contexts, each behaving like an independent device instance. It exposes a virtual-context table for creating, describing, and deleting contexts, along with a mapping table tying physical interfaces to virtual contexts. Its monitoring value lies in configuration and provisioning status of these software-defined partitions rather than raw hardware sensors: administrators track context row status, resource class, and interface-to-context mapping to confirm virtual instances are correctly provisioned and interfaces assigned as intended. It relies on standard SNMP row-creation conventions (RowStatus, StorageType) and is tightly coupled to the physical module/entity model of the chassis. It is deployed on large Cisco modular chassis platforms where a module needs to be logically split into multiple virtual routing/switching instances. Engineers can download the CISCO-MODULE-VIRTUALIZATION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-MODULE-VIRTUALIZATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco modular router/switch (chassis-based)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk cmVirtualContextTable/cmVirtualContextEntry to check cmVirtContextName, cmVirtContextDescr, and cmVirtContextRowStatus to confirm each virtual context is created and active, and inspect cmVirtContextResourceClass to see its assigned resource tier. Cross-referencing cmVirtContextIfMapTable/cmVirtContextIfMapEntry with cmVirtContextIfMapType and cmVirtContextIfMapIdLow would verify that specific physical interfaces are correctly bound to the intended virtual context. A context stuck in a non-active RowStatus, or an interface missing from the IfMap table, would indicate an incomplete or failed virtualization provisioning step.

What Can Be Monitored

  • virtual context name/description
  • virtual context row status
  • resource class assignment
  • interface-to-virtual-context mapping
