Description: Extends H.248/Megaco media gateway control protocol management with Cisco-specific attributes and statistics.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-MEGACO-EXT-MIB?
CISCO-MEGACO-EXT-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB extending the CISCO-IETF-MEGACO-MIB to add Cisco-specific attributes for devices implementing the ITU-T H.248/MEGACO media gateway control protocol. It exposes gateway configuration objects (media gateway controller group and IP address indices, association ID, maximum contexts and terminations per context) alongside performance-timing counters for message-exchange responsiveness between the media gateway (MG) and controller (MGC). Its monitoring value is centered on software/protocol performance status: administrators use it to track how long the gateway and controller take to execute commands and provisioning requests, and how many connection retries occur, which together reveal signaling delays or instability in the H.248 control relationship that could disrupt voice/media gateway service. It explicitly depends on and extends the CISCO-IETF-MEGACO-MIB, importing its base gateway and context object model. It is deployed on Cisco media gateways and gateway controllers in VoIP/PSTN gateway environments using H.248/Megaco signaling, where the CISCO-MEGACO-EXT-MIB MIB gives operators visibility into gateway-controller responsiveness.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-MEGACO-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco media gateway/media gateway controller (H.248/Megaco)
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll cmedxGatewayConfigTable/cmedxGatewayConfigEntry keyed by cmedxGatewayMgcGroupIndex and cmedxGatewayIpAddressIndex to check cmedxGatewayMaxContexts and cmedxGatewayMaxTermsInContext against actual call volume, watching for capacity exhaustion. cmedxGatewayMgExecTime and cmedxGatewayMgcExecTime reveal whether the gateway or the controller side is responsible for slow command processing, while cmedxGatewayNumConnRetries climbing indicates the MG-MGC association is unstable. cmedxGatewayProvisionRespTime would be checked when troubleshooting slow termination provisioning during call setup.
What Can Be Monitored
- gateway/controller command execution time
- provisioning response time
- connection retry count
- max contexts and terminations per context
- MGC group/association identity

The default value of this object is based on the formula: level 1: 100 other level: 100 - ((80/(nol - 1)) * (level - 1)) Here: nol : number of level(cmedxCRRNumOfLevel) level: specific level (cmedxCallReduceLevelNum) User can configure this object, the rule is: level x > level x+1 |
| cmedxCallReduceRateGroup | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.104.2.2.3 | This group contains objects used to manage and/or monitor the rate at which call attempts are made by Media gateway controller on this Media Gateway. | ||
| cmedxCallReduceRateNotifyGroup | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.104.2.2.8 | This group contains objects used for H.248.10 congestion control notification. | ||
| U32 cmedxCallRenotifInterval | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.104.1.1.4.1.2 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object specifies the interval of the congestion renotification from the media gateway to the MGC. In the event of congestion on the Media Gateway, gateway generates an event towards MGC. Using this message, MG requests percentage reduction in the rate of calls that MGC is attempting towards MG. After sending this indication, MG starts a timer based on 'cmedxCallRenotifInterval'. At this timer expires, MG will re-send the message to MGC indicating that it is still in congested state. If MGC does not receive another notification, MGC will resume to the original call rate. If MGC requires re-notifications, it is user's responsibility to set the value of this MIB object on MG appropriately. The value of this object should be set such that it factors into the network delay and re-notification timer (similar to this MIB object) configured on MGC. The zero means MGC does not require re-notifications, MGC will keep CallReduceRate until receive another notification from the Media Gateway. |

Lower the number, higher the preference of the CODEC. If this object is set to 0, the corresponding CODEC will not be used in coded negotiation procedure. Initially, if the value of cmedxCodecNegotiationCodec is g711u, this object is set to 1, else this object is set to 0. For CODECs having the same preference, the entry with the lower index has higher precedence. |
| cmedxCodecNegotiationTable | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.104.1.1.6 | not-accessible | This table contains configuration information for different type of CODEC negotiation of calls which include voice call over adaptation layer AAL1 and AAL5. If the value lclLcoRcd(5), lclRcdLco(6) of cvapCodecNegotiationOption is used as CODEC negotiation option, the CODEC list configuration information in this table will be used for CODEC negotiation. | |
| cmedxCommandProcStatsEntry | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.104.1.2.6.1 | not-accessible | The information in each entry is for a media gateway link. | |
| cmedxCommandProcStatsTable | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.104.1.2.6 | not-accessible | This table provides the statistics related to H.248 command processing on a media gateway link. | |
| cmedxCommandStatsEntry | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.104.1.2.2.1 | not-accessible | The system creates one entry for each media gateway link when it is created. | |
| cmedxCommandStatsTable | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.104.1.2.2 | not-accessible | This table provides the H.248 Command related statistics for the media gateway link. The H.248 protocol provides commands for manipulating the logical entities of the protocol connection model, Contexts and Terminations. For example, Commands exist to add Terminations to a Context, modify Terminations, subtract Terminations from a Context, and audit properties of Contexts or Terminations. Most commands are for the specific use of the Media Gateway Controller (MGC) as command initiator in controlling Media Gateways (MG) as command responders. The exceptions are the Notify and ServiceChange commands: Notify is sent from Media Gateway to Media Gateway Controller, and ServiceChange may be sent by either entity. | |
