Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for Media Gateway Controller management on Cisco MGX and voice platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-MGC-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-MGC-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES module (ciscoAgentCapability 370) describing exactly which parts of CISCO-MGC-MIB a given agent implements — in this case the VXSM Media Gateway Controller card on MGX8850 Release 5.0.0 voice platforms. It declares support for groups such as cMgcMIBGroup, cMgcIpMIBGroup, cMgcGrpParamGroup, cMgcGrpGroup, and cMgcGrpProtocolGroup, and then narrows individual objects with VARIATION clauses: cMgcIndex is restricted to 4 MGCs, cMgcIpAddress/cMgcIpAddressType support only IPv4, cMgcIpConfigEntry requires cMgcIpAddress at row creation, and cMgcGrpMgcUdpPort is limited to the 1024-16383 range. As a capabilities statement rather than a data MIB, it does not itself expose live counters — it tells a management station what subset of CISCO-MGC-MIB's Media Gateway Controller objects it can expect to poll or set successfully on this platform. It is deployed alongside CISCO-MGC-MIB on Cisco MGX8850/VXSM voice gateway controller platforms, and integrators can consult the CISCO-MGC-CAPABILITY MIB to confirm which MGC configuration objects are supported before scripting SNMP sets against them.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-MGC-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MGX8850 (VXSM Media Gateway Controller card, Release 5.0.0)

Monitoring Examples

An operator checks the CISCO-MGC-CAPABILITY VARIATION for cMgcIndex before scripting configuration of a fifth media gateway controller entry; discovering the range is capped at 1..4 explains why an SNMP SET to create a 5th cMgcIndex row is rejected by the agent.

What Can Be Monitored

  • supported CISCO-MGC-MIB object groups
  • MGC index range restrictions
  • IPv4-only address type support
  • MGC UDP port range restrictions
  • row-creation requirements for IP config entries
