What Is CISCO-IETF-MEGACO-MIB?

CISCO-IETF-MEGACO-MIB is a Cisco implementation of the IETF Megaco/H.248 media gateway control protocol MIB, used to manage media gateways that bridge circuit-switched voice networks and packet telephony. It exposes configuration and identification data for gateway links, including gateway IDs, IP addresses, ports, and encoding schemes used for signaling between a media gateway controller and its gateways. This data supports monitoring the software/configuration status of voice gateway links, letting an administrator confirm that a gateway's control-plane link is correctly addressed and using the expected encoding and protocol before troubleshooting call-quality or connectivity issues. The MIB is based on the IETF Megaco MIB draft and complements ITU-T H.248 signaling, and is typically deployed alongside other Cisco voice/media gateway MIBs. It is common in service provider and enterprise voice-over-IP gateway deployments. Engineers can download the CISCO-IETF-MEGACO-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator inspects cmedGatewayConfigTable (cmedGatewayConfigEntry rows keyed by cmedGatewayId) to verify cmedGatewayIPAddress and cmedGatewayPort match the expected media gateway controller, and that cmedGatewayEncodingScheme and cmedGatewayProtocol are correctly set for the deployed signaling stack. Cross-referencing cmedLinkIdTable's cmedNextLinkId helps confirm link IDs are being allocated as expected for cmedGatewayLinkId associations. A gateway showing an unexpected IP address or protocol value would indicate a misconfigured or misprovisioned media gateway link.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cmedNumInMessages OID:

Select a Cisco media gateways / voice gateway router as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cmedNumInMessages into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the total number of messages received on the link. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
