What Is CISCO-MGC-MIB?

CISCO-MGC-MIB is a Cisco proprietary MIB for managing the Cisco Media Gateway Controller (MGC), a call-agent/softswitch platform providing call-control intelligence to voice gateways via signaling protocols such as SGCP and MGCP. It exposes configuration data for MGC and MGC-group associations per gateway, including domain names, IP addressing with multiple-IP support, and the resolution/protocol used, centered on the cMgcConfigTable and cMgcIpConfigTable. For monitoring, it lets an operator confirm the call-agent-to-gateway signaling relationship is correctly configured (which MGC controls which gateway, and via which IP addresses) and receive cMgcMibNotifications for related fault or state-change events, functioning more as a call-control configuration/fault MIB than a hardware sensor MIB. It is used alongside Cisco's voice gateway MIBs since the MGC/gateway relationship spans both the call agent (external) and the gateway device. Administrators often first inspect it with a CISCO-MGC-MIB MIB Browser session before scripting automated polling, and it is typically deployed in Cisco VoIP/PSTN gateway networks using MGCP/SGCP-controlled media gateways.

Monitoring Examples

cMgcConfigTable/cMgcConfigEntry, indexed by cMgcIndex, expose cMgcDomainName and cMgcNumMgcGroups so an admin can confirm which call-agent domain and how many MGC groups are configured for a given gateway. cMgcIpConfigTable/cMgcIpConfigEntry list the associated cMgcIpAddressType/cMgcIpAddress entries, letting an operator verify all expected call-agent IP addresses are registered (cMgcNumIP) - a mismatch here would indicate a misconfigured or unreachable call agent. cMgcResolution and cMgcMibNotifications round out the config/fault-notification picture for the gateway-to-MGC relationship.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cMgcNumMgcGroups OID:

Select a Cisco Media Gateway Controller (MGC) platform as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cMgcNumMgcGroups into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports how many Media Gateway Controller (MGC) groups this MGC is currently associated with. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value drops to 0 unexpectedly, since that means the MGC is no longer associated with any group and can't control gateways. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
