What Is CHIPCOMMIB?

CHIPCOMMIB is another enterprise MIB module from Chipcom (later 3Com) covering the same switching-hub product line as CHIPCOM-MIB, providing device identification, diagnostics, and network-management configuration for Chipcom LAN switching hubs used in enterprise campus environments. It exposes device identity (product, serial number, ID), software/firmware version, diagnostic self-test status, network-management configuration, and authentication-failure tracking. It supports hardware/software status monitoring through chipGenDiagnostics (self-test health), chipGenVers (software version), chipGenServiceDate, and chipGenTimeLastChanged (last configuration change), letting operators verify a hub is functioning and up to date. Like CHIPCOM-MIB it is a largely self-contained legacy enterprise MIB with limited dependency on later standard conventions beyond basic SNMPv2-SMI OBJECT-TYPE definitions. It is deployed in legacy enterprise LAN environments operating Chipcom/3Com switching hub hardware, often as an alternate or duplicate compile of the identically-purposed object tree. Engineers can download the CHIPCOMMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CHIPCOMMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator can poll chipGenID and chipGenServiceDate to confirm a hub's identity and manufacture/service date for asset tracking, while chipGenDiagnostics flags whether onboard self-test diagnostics have detected a hardware fault. chipGenNetman exposes the device's network-management configuration for verification, and chipGenAuthFailureAddr surfaces the address of a station that recently failed authentication. The chipEcho* objects (chipEchoStart, chipEchoAddr, chipEchoPattern) allow an admin to run a loopback test against a specific destination to confirm connectivity.
