Description: Monitors Sonus Networks gateway hardware alarm contact inputs for external environmental and equipment faults.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SONUS-ALARM-CONTACT-MIB?

SONUS-ALARM-CONTACT-MIB is a vendor MIB from Sonus Networks (telecom softswitch/media gateway equipment, later part of Ribbon Communications) for managing physical alarm contact inputs and outputs on gateway hardware shelves. It exposes administrative configuration for alarm relay outputs per shelf and relay index (operational state, sense polarity, activation value, start delay, cutoff behavior) and corresponding status tables reporting the current state of those alarm contacts. This is a direct hardware-status/fault-monitoring MIB: it is used to detect external equipment and environmental faults (such as door open, smoke, generic facility alarms, or connected equipment failure) wired into the gateway's alarm contact interface, complementing internal sensors with site-level fault detection. It works alongside Sonus's broader node/chassis MIBs (such as SONUS-NODE-RESOURCES-MIB) which cover internal hardware inventory and resource status, and relies on the SONUS-SMI enterprise MIB for its object identifier root. Typical deployment context is carrier and enterprise voice/media gateway sites where shelf-level physical alarm contacts feed into a centralized NOC alarm system via SNMP traps. Engineers can download the SONUS-ALARM-CONTACT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SONUS-ALARM-CONTACT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sonus Networks (Ribbon Communications) media gateway/softswitch shelf hardware

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll sonusAlarmOutStatTable/sonusAlarmOutStatEntry, keyed by shelf and relay index, to read the live state of each configured alarm contact and compare it against the expected sonusAlarmOutAdmnSense polarity and sonusAlarmOutAdmnValue configured in sonusAlarmOutAdmnTable. A relay entry transitioning to an active alarm state (e.g., a facility door or power alarm wired to sonusAlarmOutAdmnRelayIndex) would trigger a notification under sonusAlarmManagerMIBNotifications for immediate NOC attention. The sonusAlarmOutAdmnStartDelay and sonusAlarmOutAdmnCutoff settings let operators tune how alarms are debounced and reset to avoid false positives.

What Can Be Monitored

  • alarm contact operational state
  • alarm relay activation/sense polarity
  • alarm start delay and cutoff timing
  • live alarm contact status per shelf/relay

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using sonusAlarmPortState OID:

Select a Sonus Networks (Ribbon Communications) media gateways/softswitch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type sonusAlarmPortState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The current state of the inbound alarm port. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value changes from whatever you observe as its normal, steady state for this installation, since which state (open or closed) counts as healthy depends on how the alarm contact is wired. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
