Category: SCTE HMS Cable Headend

Description: Monitors SCTE HMS headend MPEG transport stream program integrity and continuity errors.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SCTE-HMS-MPEG-MIB?

SCTE-HMS-MPEG-MIB is part of the SCTE Hardware Management System (HMS) family of standards used in cable-television headend equipment, defining objects for monitoring MPEG transport-stream inputs on devices such as QAM modulators, encoders, and multiplexers. It exposes signal-integrity and stream-content data: loss-of-signal timeouts, per-input transport-stream tables describing connection type, active connection, PSI (program-specific information) detection, start time, and the number of programs carried. Its monitoring focus is squarely on the health and status of incoming video/audio signal feeds rather than general device hardware, letting an operator detect a lost, misconfigured, or empty transport stream before it causes a service outage. As part of the SCTE HMS suite it is designed to be used alongside other HMS MIBs (e.g. common/equipment MIBs for chassis-level hardware status) under a shared heMpegCommonMIB naming convention. It is deployed in cable and IPTV headend facilities on devices that receive, process, or aggregate MPEG-2 transport streams, with the SCTE-HMS-MPEG-MIB reference detailing the signal-integrity objects operators rely on there.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SCTE-HMS-MPEG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • cable/IPTV headend MPEG equipment (QAM modulators, encoders, multiplexers) conforming to the SCTE HMS standard, vendor-neutral

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll mpegInputTSTable entries (mpegInputTSIndex, mpegInputTSType, mpegInputTSConnectionType, mpegInputTSConnection) to see which physical input is configured and mpegInputTSActiveConnection to confirm a live feed is actually connected. mpegInputTSPsiDetected and mpegInputTSNumPrograms reveal whether valid PSI tables and the expected program count are present in the stream; a drop to zero programs alongside mpegLossOfSignalTimeout expiring would indicate a lost upstream feed. mpegInputTSStartTime helps correlate when a given input session began relative to an outage report.

What Can Be Monitored

  • loss-of-signal timeout
  • input transport-stream connection type/status
  • active connection state
  • PSI detection
  • number of programs in stream
  • stream start time
