Category: Cable and DOCSIS

Description: Manages Cisco Scientific Atlanta DOCSIS cable modem configuration, registration, and status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SA-CM-MIB?

SA-CM-MIB is a Cisco (originally Scientific Atlanta) MIB for DOCSIS cable modems, exposing vendor-specific configuration and control objects layered on top of standard DOCSIS cable modem management. It covers LED indicator behavior, IGMP/multicast handling, MAC aging, internal DHCP server operation, and ARP rate limiting. Its monitoring/management value lies in confirming modem software behavior and control-plane health: objects like cmAPAgingOut and cmAPMulticastPromiscuousMode reveal how the modem is handling traffic, saCmArpRateLimit shows whether ARP flood protection is active, and cmAPFactoryReset provides a remote software-level recovery action for a misconfigured unit. As a vendor extension it depends on the standard DOCSIS cable modem MIB framework (e.g., DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-MIB) for baseline registration and provisioning status. It is typically deployed on Cisco/Scientific Atlanta DOCSIS cable modems managed by cable ISPs. Engineers can download the SA-CM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SA-CM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco/Scientific Atlanta DOCSIS cable modems

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls cmAPIgmp and cmAPMulticastPromiscuousMode to verify multicast/IGMP proxy behavior on a modem, checks cmAPAgingOut for MAC address table aging behavior, and monitors saCmArpRateLimit to confirm ARP flood protection thresholds are in effect; cmAPFactoryReset can be invoked remotely to reset a misbehaving modem back to factory defaults.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IGMP proxy mode
  • multicast promiscuous mode
  • MAC aging-out behavior
  • ARP rate limit setting
  • internal DHCP server status
  • LED indicator treatment settings
