What Is SA-MTA-MIB?

SA-MTA-MIB is a Cisco (originally Scientific Atlanta) vendor MIB for managing Multimedia Terminal Adapter (MTA) functionality embedded in cable voice (PacketCable/DOCSIS eMTA) devices, covering telephony line provisioning and signaling. It exposes per-endpoint (telephone line) configuration and state such as hook-flash timing thresholds, physical and logical line/hook state, and device-level signaling support settings like LCS (Line Control Signaling) and off-hook warning tone timers. Its monitoring value is centered on telephony service/software status: saMtaEndPntStatePhysical and saMtaEndPntStateLogical let an operator confirm whether a subscriber's phone line is on-hook/off-hook and in the expected logical service state, central to detecting stuck lines or service faults, while hook-flash timing objects confirm signaling parameters are correctly provisioned. It builds on the broader PacketCable/DOCSIS eMTA architecture and complements standard cable modem MIBs used for the same device's data-plane side. It is deployed by cable operators (MSOs) managing residential VoIP/eMTA endpoints delivered over DOCSIS cable modems. Engineers can download the SA-MTA-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SA-MTA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll saMtaEndPointTable / saMtaEndPointEntry rows to check saMtaEndPntStatePhysical and saMtaEndPntStateLogical for a subscriber line -- a physical state showing off-hook combined with a logical state that never returns to idle would indicate a stuck line or signaling fault requiring a truck roll or line reset. saMtaEndPntHookFlashMinTime and saMtaEndPntHookFlashMaxTime would be checked to confirm hook-flash detection windows are correctly provisioned for features like call-waiting, and saMtaDevOffHookWarnTOBusy configures/reports the off-hook warning tone timeout at the device level.
