Category: Cable and DOCSIS, WAN and Routing

Description: Manages Cisco Scientific Atlanta DOCSIS residential gateway configuration and subscriber access.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SA-RG-MIB?

SA-RG-MIB is a Cisco (originally Scientific Atlanta) MIB for managing DOCSIS residential gateway devices, covering router/wireless gateway behavior that can also be delivered as part of a cable modem's DOCSIS configuration file. It exposes device-mode and reset objects, LAN/WLAN isolation settings, remote web-access port configuration, IPv6 transition/passthrough settings, NTP time-sync configuration (including a server table), and a factory-reset trigger. This is primarily a configuration and software-status MIB for the gateway's embedded router/Wi-Fi functions — its monitoring value lies in confirming settings like NTP sync status, isolation policy, and remote-access exposure rather than physical environmental sensors, giving visibility into the software configuration state of the subscriber's home gateway. It is used within the DOCSIS ecosystem alongside standard DOCSIS cable-modem MIBs (e.g., DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-MIB) since gateway settings can be pushed via the same provisioning configuration file. It is deployed on cable operator-provided DOCSIS residential gateways combining cable modem and router/Wi-Fi functions in subscriber homes, and provisioning teams generally begin with an SA-RG-MIB download to compile the module into their DOCSIS configuration-file tooling.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SA-RG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • DOCSIS residential gateway (cable modem/router combo)

Monitoring Examples

An operator or provisioning system would check saRgDeviceMode to confirm the gateway's operating mode and saRgDeviceTimeSetupNtpEnabled together with saRgDeviceTimeSetupNtpServerTable/saRgDeviceTimeSetupNtpServerEntry to verify the gateway is synchronizing time against the expected NTP server. saRgDeviceRemoteWebAccessPort would be checked to confirm whether remote web management is exposed and on which port, a useful security-posture check, while saRgDeviceLanLanIsolation/saRgDeviceLanWlanIsolation confirm whether client isolation policies are active. saRgDeviceFactoryReset and saRgDeviceResetDefaultEnable would be relevant when diagnosing an unexpected gateway reset to factory defaults.

What Can Be Monitored

  • device operating mode
  • NTP sync status and configured server
  • remote web access port exposure
  • LAN/WLAN isolation policy
  • factory reset state/trigger
