Description: Manages Cisco Scientific Atlanta cable modem multimedia terminal adapter (MTA) provisioning and status.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SA-CM-MTA-MIB?
SA-CM-MTA-MIB is a Cisco (formerly Scientific Atlanta) vendor-private MIB, active only at the Cable Modem's own IP address, that controls the embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (MTA) voice function inside a DOCSIS/PacketCable cable modem. It exposes provisioning-mode control (saCmMtaProvisioningMode, selecting among PacketCable BASIC/HYBRID/SECURE flows or CM-config-file-only VoIP provisioning), DHCP option requirements (saCmMtaDhcpPktcOption for option 122 vs 177, saCmMtaDhcpOptionSixty for the DHCP option 60 vendor class string), and enable/disable and filter-behavior controls (saCmMtaDevice, saCmMtaIpFilters, saCmMtaSidCount for supported service-flow IDs). Additional objects govern Time-of-Day requirement (saCmMtaRequireTod), config-file decryption (saCmMtaDecryptMtaConfigFile), post-software-download reboot timing (saCmMtaSwUpgradeControlTimer), and the provisioning-time SNMP community string (saCmMtaProvSnmpSetCommunityString). Since most of these objects are set only via the CM configuration file rather than live SNMP SET, monitoring this MIB is primarily useful for confirming how a deployed MTA was provisioned and whether embedded voice service is enabled at all. It depends on the underlying DOCSIS cable-modem MIB stack and PacketCable provisioning framework, and is deployed on Cisco/Scientific Atlanta embedded-MTA cable modems, and the SA-CM-MTA-MIB MIB reference documents each of these provisioning objects.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SA-CM-MTA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco/Scientific Atlanta embedded-MTA DOCSIS cable modems
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls saCmMtaDevice to confirm the embedded MTA is enabled and checks saCmMtaProvisioningMode against the expected PacketCable flow; a device value stuck at disable(0) despite DHCP option 122.1 being present would indicate the MTA failed its provisioning handshake and the subscriber's voice line will not register.
What Can Be Monitored
- MTA enable/disable state
- provisioning mode (PacketCable/config-file/web-page)
- DHCP PacketCable option requirement (122/177)
- IP filter application scope
- SID/service-flow count
- software-upgrade reboot delay timer
