What Is SA-HARDWARE-MIB?
SA-HARDWARE-MIB is a hardware inventory MIB for Cisco Scientific Atlanta DOCSIS cable devices such as cable modems and set-top boxes. It exposes descriptive hardware inventory data including model, hardware version, serial number, MAC address, manufacture date, and identification of key onboard modules like power supply, diplexer, main processor, tuner, SLIC, and memory. It is primarily used to monitor the hardware identity and presence/status of these physical components -- e.g. confirming power supply and processor module presence, and reading main/flash memory sizes -- as part of asset tracking and remote diagnostics of cable access devices. It builds on standard DOCSIS/cable modem MIB conventions and is often polled alongside DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-MIB. Typical deployment is on cable operator networks managing large fleets of Scientific Atlanta (now Cisco) cable modems and VoIP-enabled devices. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SA-HARDWARE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples
An operator could poll saHwDescrModel, saHwDescrHardwareVersion and saHwDescrSerialNumber under the saHwDescr subtree to build hardware inventory records, and cross-reference saHwDescrCmMacAddress for device identification. Reading saHwDescrPowerSupply, saHwDescrTuner, and saHwDescrMainProcessor reveals which hardware variant/module set is installed, while saHwDescrMemoryMain and saHwDescrMemoryFlash show installed memory capacity. Anomalies such as an unexpected saHwDescrManufactureDate or missing module identifiers can flag counterfeit or field-swapped hardware. The saVoip branch indicates the MIB also groups VoIP-related hardware descriptors for devices with embedded telephony hardware.
