Category: Power Management

Description: Implements the IETF Power over Ethernet MIB (RFC 3621), managing PoE PSE port power delivery, class detection, and fault status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PETH-MIB?

PETH-MIB is the IETF standards-track Power Ethernet MIB (RFC 3621, from the Ethernet Interfaces and Hub MIB working group) that models Power over Ethernet on both Power Source Equipment (PSE, e.g. switches and mid-span injectors) and Powered Devices (PD). pethPsePortTable (indexed by pethPsePortGroupIndex and pethPsePortIndex) exposes per-port power enable/detection control, pethPsePortPowerDetectionStatus and pethPsePortDetectionOperStatus (deliveringPower/off/searching/fault), pethPsePortPowerPriority for load-shedding decisions, and pethPsePortPowerClassifications (IEEE 802.3af class 0-3). pethMainPseTable reports chassis-level power supply health - pethMainPsePower (nominal wattage), pethMainPseConsumptionPower, backup-supply presence/activation, and a configurable pethMainPseUsageThreshold - while pethPdPortTable covers the PD side, and pethTrapsControlTable plus five notifications (pethPsePortOnOffTrap, pethPsePortDenyTrap, pethPsePortStatusTrap, pethMainPseBackUpActivatedTrap, pethMainPowerUsageTrap) signal port power changes and threshold breaches. It's implemented on managed PoE switches and mid-span PoE injectors from many vendors as the standard baseline (often extended by vendor-specific MIBs, e.g. Enterasys's or Cisco's own PoE extensions), and the PETH-MIB RFC is the reference most vendors cite when documenting their PoE MIB support.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PETH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 3621), implemented on PoE-capable switches and mid-span injectors across manufacturers

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls pethPsePortDetectionOperStatus for a port expected to power an IP phone and sees fault(4) instead of deliveringPower(1); checking pethPsePortDenyError for lowPriority(2) alongside a pethMainPowerUsageTrap indicates the chassis hit its usage threshold and shed that port due to its configured priority.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PSE port power enable/detection status
  • PSE port power class and priority
  • PSE port deny/error and status change traps
  • main PSE nominal vs. consumption power and usage threshold
  • backup PSE presence/activation status
  • PD port power-pair and detection status
