What Is EtherLike-MIB?

EtherLike-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track module (built on IEEE 802.3) that supplements the generic IF-MIB with Ethernet-specific interface statistics and configuration objects. It exposes per-interface Ethernet data such as frame error counters, collision statistics, and duplex/speed-related parameters, going beyond the generic interface counters that IF-MIB provides. It is heavily used for monitoring the health of an Ethernet link's hardware and driver behavior — rising alignment errors or FCS (frame check sequence) errors typically point to cabling, NIC, or duplex-mismatch problems, while collision counts help identify shared-media contention or half-duplex misconfiguration. It explicitly depends on and complements IF-MIB (the ifTable/ifXTable indexing), and it directly references the IEEE 802.3 standard for its semantics. It is deployed on essentially any networked device with Ethernet interfaces — switches, routers, servers, and NICs — wherever detailed Ethernet-layer fault diagnosis is needed, and most monitoring tool documentation simply calls it the EtherLike MIB when referencing dot3StatsTable counters.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would typically poll the dot3StatsTable (indexed by dot3StatsIndex, tied back to an ifIndex) to track counters like alignment errors and FCS errors on a given Ethernet port; a sudden climb in these counters on one interface, especially combined with a duplex mismatch indication, is a classic sign of a bad cable, failing transceiver, or auto-negotiation problem on that link.
