Description: Manages NMS Communications switch global configuration, port settings, and switching fabric statistics.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NMS-SWITCH-MIB?
NMS-SWITCH-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from NMS Communications that manages switch-level configuration and operation, covering global switch settings, per-port configuration, port security, and switching fabric statistics. It exposes configuration data (port and system settings), security data (MAC-based port security rules), and performance counters for the switching fabric. Its monitoring value spans both hardware and software status: it lets administrators track switch module presence and health under switchModules, overall switch system state under switchSystem, and port-level security violations via the port security tables, revealing issues like an unauthorized MAC address triggering a port lockdown or a switching module going offline. It is a proprietary MIB but its port-security concept parallels the standard IEEE 802.1X/port-security conventions used industry-wide. It is typically deployed on NMS Communications switch products used within voice/media gateway network infrastructure. Engineers can download the NMS-SWITCH-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-SWITCH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- nms Co., Ltd. network switch (port security/switching fabric, vendor unidentified)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll portSecurityTable and portSecurityMacAddressTable to confirm which MAC addresses are currently learned and permitted on a secured port, and an entry showing a violation or an unexpected MAC would reveal a potential unauthorized device connection. Polling switchSystem alongside switchModules would show overall switch health and confirm all expected line modules are present and operational, with a missing module entry indicating a hardware failure or removal. switchMIBObjects serves as the root of this object tree tying these areas together.
What Can Be Monitored
- port security violations
- learned MAC addresses per port
- switch module presence/status
- switch system operational state
- switching fabric statistics
