What Is NMS-SMI?

NMS-SMI is the Structure of Management Information module for NMS Communications' enterprise product line, a maker of media/voice processing and telephony hardware, defining the top-level OID registration arc for all NMS-specific MIBs. No functional data objects were identified in this module; its module description indicates it primarily establishes subtrees like nmsPolicyAuto for automatically-assigned Policy Management OIDs, i.e., it is purely structural. It therefore has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status; that is the responsibility of the functional NMS Communications MIBs that register under this SMI. It is a foundational dependency for the broader NMS Communications MIB family. It is deployed with NMS Communications media/voice processing boards and telephony platforms, and any specific NMS-SMI OID one encounters in a trap or trace ultimately resolves back to this SMI's registration arc, even though the module itself defines no pollable objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • NMS Communications media/voice processing and telephony hardware

Monitoring Examples

This module defines only OID registration subtrees (such as nmsPolicyAuto for policy-management OID assignment) with no runtime tables or scalars, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe; actual device status objects would reside in functional NMS Communications MIBs built on this SMI.

OIDs
OID symbolicOID numericTypeAccessDescription
nms1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10nms Products is the root OBJECT IDENTIFIER from which sysObjectID values are assigned.
nmsProducts1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.1nms Products is the root OBJECT IDENTIFIER from which sysObjectID values are assigned.
nmslocal1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.2Subtree beneath which pre-10.2 MIBS were built.
nmstemporary1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.3Subtree beneath which pre-10.2 experiments were placed.
nmsMgmt1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.9nmsMgmt is the main subtree for new mib development.
nmsModules1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.12nmsModules provides a root object identifier from which MODULE-IDENTITY values may be assigned.
nmsPolicyAuto1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.18nmsPolicyAuto is the root of the nms-assigned OID subtree for OIDs which are automatically assigned for use in Policy Management.
nmsPibToMib1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.18.2nmsPibToMib is the root of the nms-assigned OID subtree for MIBs which are algorithmically generated/translated from nms PIBs with OIDs assigned under the nmsPIB subtree. These generated MIBs allow management entities (other the current Policy Server) to read the downloaded policy. By convention, for PIB 'nmsPIB.x', the generated MIB shall have the name 'nmsPibToMib.x'.
nmsWorkGroup1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.20nmsWorkGroup is the main subtree for new mib development categorized by module function.
nmsEPONGroup1.3.6.1.4.1.11606.10.101nmsEPONGroup is the main subtree for new epon mib .
