Category: Switch Management

Description: Manages stacking configuration for 3Com stackable switches including unit assignment and topology.

What Is A3COM0017-STACK-CONFIG?

This MIB manages stacking configuration for 3Com stackable switches, tracking how individual switch units are assigned within a stack and their physical/topological arrangement. It exposes per-unit data including physical location/address, unit type and description, PROM/firmware version, management capability, and unit state, alongside overall stack topology and address information. It has clear hardware-status monitoring value: stackUnitState reveals whether each stack member is up/down or otherwise degraded, stackUnitLastReset flags recent reboots that might indicate a hardware fault or power event, and stackUnitPromVersion supports firmware-compliance checks across the stack. It builds on standard stack-management concepts and typically coexists with base switch/bridge MIBs for the individual unit's port-level data. It's deployed on 3Com stackable switch products forming a logical stack of physical units. Engineers can download the A3COM0017-STACK-CONFIG file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in A3COM0017-STACK-CONFIG. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • 3Com stackable switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll stackUnitState for every stackUnitEntry in stackConfigTable to confirm all stack members are online, and check stackUnitLastReset to spot a unit that recently rebooted unexpectedly, often pointing to a power or hardware issue. Comparing stackUnitPromVersion and stackUnitType across units helps ensure firmware/hardware consistency within the stack, while stackUnitLocation and stackUnitAddress confirm the physical/logical mapping used for troubleshooting a specific unit.

What Can Be Monitored

  • stack unit state (up/down)
  • last reset time per unit
  • unit type and description
  • PROM/firmware version
  • management capability
  • unit physical location/address
