Category: Domain: Optical Transport, Network Interfaces, Optical and WDM, Technology: Optical Transport, Vendor: Juniper

Description: Provides management objects for optical interfaces on Juniper Networks devices, including signal level, wavelength, and transceiver status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is JNX-OPT-IF-MIB?

JNX-OPT-IF-MIB is a Juniper Networks MIB, closely modeled on RFC 3591, for managing pre-OTN and OTN (Optical Transport Network) interfaces such as those found on Juniper's optical/DWDM-capable line cards. It exposes data on Optical Transport Module (OTM) framing structures -- order, reduced/full framing, supported bit rates, interface type, tandem connection monitoring (TCM) depth, and optical reach -- as well as performance-monitoring interval tables. Its monitoring value lies in tracking optical hardware and signal status: bit-rate and framing configuration, optical reach capability, and current/daily elapsed-time performance-monitoring counters that reveal error seconds or signal degradation on optical transport links. It explicitly derives from and depends on RFC 3591 (the standard OTN interface MIB), extending it with Juniper-specific object identifiers. It is typically deployed on Juniper routers equipped with OTN/DWDM optical interfaces in service-provider transport and long-haul/metro optical networks, with the JNX-OPT-IF-MIB MIB defining the framing and performance-monitoring objects those deployments rely on.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JNX-OPT-IF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper Networks router with OTN/DWDM optical interfaces

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls jnxoptIfOTMnTable (jnxoptIfOTMnEntry: jnxoptIfOTMnOrder, jnxoptIfOTMnBitRates, jnxoptIfOTMnInterfaceType, jnxoptIfOTMnOpticalReach) to confirm an optical line card is configured for the correct OTN framing and bit rate for its DWDM circuit. Polling jnxoptIfPerfMonIntervalTable (jnxoptIfPerfMonCurrentTimeElapsed, jnxoptIfPerfMonCurDayTimeElapsed) lets the admin track how far into the current 15-minute or 24-hour performance bin the counters are, so a spike in optical errors within that window can be correctly attributed to a specific time period, revealing transient fiber degradation or amplifier issues.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OTN framing order and bit rate configuration
  • optical interface type and reach
  • tandem connection monitoring depth
  • performance-monitoring interval elapsed time
  • optical signal/error performance counters
