What Is Amperion-MIB?

Amperion-MIB is a private enterprise module for Amperion's Broadband over Powerline (BPL) networking equipment, covering configuration and status of the powerline network interfaces and CPE devices (referred to as 'CD' units) that carry data over electrical wiring. Its data mixes hardware inventory (MAC addresses, hardware/firmware/driver version) with configuration objects (device type, link association) and a device reset control. In monitoring terms it is used to confirm that each powerline CPE unit is online, correctly linked to its parent node, and running expected firmware -- plCdHardwareVersion, plCdFirmwareVersion, and plCdDriverVersion give a software/hardware inventory snapshot useful for spotting devices running outdated or mismatched firmware, while plCdLink shows which network segment a CD unit is associated with. It is a self-contained vendor MIB with the ds2/powerline structure suggesting alignment with DS2 BPL chipset conventions rather than a formal IETF standard. It is deployed on Amperion BPL access points and customer-premises modems used for last-mile broadband delivery over existing power lines, making Amperion-MIB SNMP monitoring the primary way to track CPE firmware and link status across a powerline network.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Amperion-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An admin would walk plCdTable/plCdEntry, indexed by plCdIndex, to inventory each powerline CD unit's plCdType, plCdShortMacAddress/plCdLongMacAddress, and plCdLink association, and check plCdFirmwareVersion and plCdHardwareVersion to identify units running outdated firmware. If a CD unit stops responding or shows an unexpected plCdLink value, that would indicate it has dropped off its powerline segment or re-associated unexpectedly. The plCdReset object would then be used remotely to power-cycle a misbehaving unit without a truck roll.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using afeCpldResetCount OID:

Select an Amperion broadband-over-powerline (BPL) access point or CPE modem (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type afeCpldResetCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports afe Cpld Reset Count. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
