Category: Device Management, Domain: Security

Description: Private MIB providing security-related extensions for Ethernet hub and repeater management including port access control.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Hub-rptr-prvt-sec?

Hub-rptr-prvt-sec is a private vendor MIB extending Ethernet hub/repeater management with port-level security controls, layered on top of standard IETF repeater MIBs. It exposes security-group tables defining per-port administrative security state along with detection modes for address mismatches and traffic anomalies, such as auto-learning, broadcast/multicast limiting, and random/disable modes. Rather than hardware sensors, its monitoring value is in detecting security and operational faults at the port level, flagging destination/source address mismatches or confirming that a port's security enforcement is administratively active. It is an extension to the standard IETF repeater MIB family and assumes baseline repeater/hub management objects are already present. It is typically deployed on managed Ethernet hub/repeater hardware in environments requiring MAC-level port security and anomaly detection, such as enterprise wiring closets with port-security policies. Engineers can download the Hub-rptr-prvt-sec file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Hub-rptr-prvt-sec. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • managed Ethernet hub/repeater with port security

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling prptrSecurityGroupTable/prptrSecurityGroupEntry (indexed by prptrSecurityGroupIndex) would check prptrSecurityGroupAdminState to confirm security enforcement is enabled on a port group, and watch prptrSecurityGroupSAMismatch/prptrSecurityGroupDAMismatch counters to detect unauthorized devices or MAC spoofing attempts on hub ports.

What Can Be Monitored

  • port security group admin state
  • source/destination address mismatch counts
  • auto-learn mode status
  • broadcast/multicast limiting mode
  • auto-replace mode status
