What Is HPN-ICF-EPON-DEVICE-MIB?

HPN-ICF-EPON-DEVICE-MIB is an H3C/HP Networking (Comware, hpnicf prefix) enterprise MIB that is directly excerpted from the IETF draft-ietf-hubmib-efm-epon-mib, adapted for EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) devices built on the IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet-in-the-First-Mile standard. It models both OLT (Optical Line Terminal) and ONU (Optical Network Unit) roles through the hpnicfEponDeviceControlTable, exposing FEC mode, OAM server/client mode, device-ready state, and registered LLID count, while the hpnicfEponDeviceRemoteMACAddressLLIDTable tracks the MAC address and registration state of each remote ONU logical link. Per-queue traffic visibility comes from the hpnicfEponDeviceStatTable, which counts transmitted, received, and dropped frames across eight priority queues (Queue0-Queue7) matching the REPORT MPCP message fields defined in 802.3ah clause 64. Fault visibility is provided by the hpnicfEponDeviceEventObjectTable, covering dying-gasp, critical-event, local-link-fault, temperature, and power/voltage alarm indications with individually enable/sample-controllable event flags. It is deployed on HP/H3C Comware EPON access equipment alongside standard IF-MIB interface objects, and administrators can download the HPN-ICF-EPON-DEVICE-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for provisioning and fault monitoring of PON access links.

An operator polls hpnicfEponDeviceObjectDeviceReadyMode and hpnicfEponDeviceObjectNumberOfLLIDs to confirm an ONU has registered successfully with its OLT, and watches hpnicfEponDeviceDyingGaspAlarmState alongside the per-queue hpnicfEponDeviceStatDroppedFramesQueue0-7 counters -- a sudden dying-gasp assertion combined with rising drop counts on a queue would indicate an impending fiber cut or failing optical transceiver.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpnicfEponDeviceStatTxFramesQueue0 OID:

Select an HP/H3C Comware EPON OLT and ONU access equipment as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpnicfEponDeviceStatTxFramesQueue0 into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports a count of the number of times a -Queue-0- frames transmission occurs. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in frames), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
