Description: ADVA Optical Networking F3 platform MIB for Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) session management and fault detection.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is F3-BFD-MIB?

F3-BFD-MIB is an ADVA Optical Networking enterprise MIB (under the fsp150cm OID arc) that extends the standard BFD-STD-MIB with vendor-specific session parameters and additional interface-membership objects for Bidirectional Forwarding Detection on the ADVA FSP150CM/CC (F3) product line. Its main table, bfdSessExtTable, AUGMENTS the standard bfdSessEntry with objects like bfdSessExtAdminState/OperationalState/SecondaryState (session administrative and operational status), bfdSessExtNegRxInterval (the negotiated receive interval actually in effect), VLAN tagging controls (bfdSessExtInnerVlanControl/Id/Pri, bfdSessExtOuterVlanControl/Id/Pri), an IPv4/IPv6 gateway pair (bfdSessExtIpGateway, bfdSessExtIpv6Gateway), and a maintenance action object (bfdSessExtAction) for clearing control-packet counters. A companion f3BfdIpIfMemberTable associates BFD sessions with the IP interfaces, VRFs, BGP peers, and OSPF interfaces defined in F3-L3-MIB that rely on that session for fast failure detection. Monitoring bfdSessExtOperationalState/SecondaryState alongside the standard BFD session state gives an operator fast (sub-second) fault detection status for a link or peer, important for triggering fast reroute/failover in Layer 3 services running over the F3 platform. It depends on BFD-STD-MIB and IANA-BFD-TC-STD-MIB for the base session model, F3-L3-MIB for the interfaces/peers protected by a session, and CM-COMMON-MIB/CM-ENTITY-MIB for ADVA's common admin/operational state types, and it is deployed on ADVA FSP150CM/CC carrier Ethernet demarcation and aggregation devices; operators can pull the F3-BFD-MIB MIB from ADVA to script this monitoring.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in F3-BFD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ADVA Optical Networking FSP150CM/CC (F3 platform) carrier Ethernet devices

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls bfdSessExtOperationalState and bfdSessExtSecondaryState for a session tied to an OSPF or BGP peering interface via f3BfdIpIfMemberTable, alongside the standard bfdSessState in BFD-STD-MIB; a session flipping to a down/degraded secondary state while the associated BGP peer remains up would indicate the fast-detection path itself has failed even though the routing session hasn't yet timed out.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BFD session admin/operational/secondary state
  • negotiated receive interval
  • inner/outer VLAN tagging for BFD control packets
  • IPv4/IPv6 gateway association per session
  • BFD-to-IP-interface/VRF/BGP/OSPF peer membership mapping
  • control-packet counter clear action
