Description: Enterasys Networks MIB for configuring MAC-based authentication to control port access using source MAC addresses.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ENTERASYS-MAC-AUTHENTICATION-MIB?

ENTERASYS-MAC-AUTHENTICATION-MIB is an Enterasys Networks vendor MIB for configuring MAC-based authentication on switch ports, letting policy be associated with and applied based on a device's source MAC address rather than full 802.1X credentials. It exposes system-wide enable state (etsysMACAuthenticationSystemEnable), per-user MAC password configuration, and a per-port configuration table (etsysMACAuthenticationPortConfigTable) covering quiet period, reauthentication period, and whether reauthentication is enabled on that port. Its monitoring value is largely software/feature-status: administrators check whether MAC authentication is enabled system-wide and per-port, whether a specific port is stuck initializing or awaiting reauthentication, and can trigger a port to reauthenticate or reinitialize -- effectively a port-security software-state monitor rather than a hardware-health one. It's an Enterasys enterprise extension that operates alongside standard IF-MIB port indexing and likely complements Enterasys's 802.1X/policy MIBs for a complete access-control picture. It is deployed on Enterasys (later Extreme Networks) enterprise switches in networks that use MAC-based port authentication for devices that can't perform full 802.1X (e.g., printers, IP phones, IoT devices). Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ENTERASYS-MAC-AUTHENTICATION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ENTERASYS-MAC-AUTHENTICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Enterasys (Extreme Networks) enterprise Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks etsysMACAuthenticationSystemEnable and per-port etsysMACAuthenticationPortEnable to confirm MAC authentication is active on the ports expected to enforce it. etsysMACAuthenticationPortReauthPeriod and etsysMACAuthenticationPortReauthEnabled are reviewed on a port where a device keeps losing network access, to check whether reauthentication is timing out too aggressively. If a port appears stuck, an operator can set etsysMACAuthenticationPortInitialize or etsysMACAuthenticationPortReauthenticate to force the port through its authentication state machine again, and etsysMACAuthenticationPortQuietPeriod is checked to understand how long a failed device must wait before retrying.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC authentication system enable state
  • per-port MAC authentication enable state
  • port reauthentication period/status
  • port quiet period
  • port initialize/reauthenticate action state
