What Is DOT3-EPON-MIB?

DOT3-EPON-MIB is an IEEE 802.3ah standard MIB for managing Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) interfaces in the Ethernet-in-the-First-Mile (EFM) access technology, defining objects per clauses 60, 64, and 65 of the standard, making it a vendor-neutral standard applicable to any compliant EPON OLT/ONU equipment. Its central focus is the Multi-Point Control Protocol (MPCP), exposed through dot3MpcpControlTable, which tracks each EPON link's operational and administrative state, mode, and synchronization timing. For monitoring purposes it directly supports hardware/link health tracking: dot3MpcpOperStatus and dot3MpcpRegistrationState reveal whether an ONU (subscriber-side optical network unit) has successfully registered and synchronized with the OLT, while dot3MpcpRoundTripTime and transmit/receive elapsed counters help diagnose fiber distance or timing anomalies affecting the point-to-multipoint optical link. It complements the base IEEE 802.3 Ethernet interface MIB (EtherLike-MIB/IF-MIB), since EPON interfaces are still Ethernet interfaces at the higher layers. It is deployed in fiber access networks (FTTH/FTTB) on both the head-end OLT and subscriber ONU equipment. Monitoring Examples

Polling dot3MpcpControlTable/dot3MpcpControlEntry lets an admin check dot3MpcpOperStatus and dot3MpcpRegistrationState for a given dot3MpcpLinkID to confirm an ONU (identified partly via dot3MpcpRemoteMACAddress) is properly registered and synced to the OLT. dot3MpcpSyncTime and dot3MpcpRoundTripTime reveal timing/distance characteristics of the optical link, and an abnormally high round-trip time or a registration state stuck in a non-registered value would indicate a degraded fiber connection or ONU hardware fault. dot3MpcpTransmitElapsed/dot3MpcpReceiveElapsed give additional insight into how long the link has been actively passing traffic since registration.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using dot3MpcpMACCtrlFramesTransmitted OID:

Select an EPON OLT/ONU (802.3ah EPON MPCP, vendor-neutral IEEE standard) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type dot3MpcpMACCtrlFramesTransmitted into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports a count of MPCP frames passed to the MAC sublayer for transmission. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in frames), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
