What Is CT-BROADCAST-MIB?

CT-BROADCAST-MIB is a Cabletron Systems (later Enterasys Networks) proprietary MIB for managing broadcast storm control on switch ports, letting administrators set broadcast traffic thresholds and view suppression/control status. It exposes a per-port control table with slot and interface identifiers, alongside counters for total broadcast frames seen, peak broadcast rate observed, the time that peak occurred, and a configurable desired broadcast threshold used to trigger control action. Its monitoring value is centered on network health and fault detection at the switch port level: tracking ctBroadcastTotalBroadcastFrames and ctBroadcastPeakBroadcastRate per port lets an administrator identify a port experiencing a broadcast storm (often from a switching loop, misbehaving NIC, or misconfigured device), and comparing the peak rate against ctBroadcastDesiredBroadcastThreshold shows whether automatic suppression should have engaged. It is a self-contained vendor MIB layered on top of standard interface indexing (ifIndex) conventions. It was typically deployed on Cabletron/Enterasys switches in enterprise LAN environments to protect network stability from broadcast storms. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CT-BROADCAST-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CT-BROADCAST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron/Enterasys enterprise LAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ctBroadcastCtlTable entries by ctBroadcastCtlSlotID and ctBroadcastCtlInterface to check ctBroadcastTotalBroadcastFrames and ctBroadcastPeakBroadcastRate for a suspect port, using ctBroadcastPeakBroadcastRateTime to determine when the spike occurred. A peak rate exceeding ctBroadcastDesiredBroadcastThreshold on a specific port would reveal an active or recent broadcast storm, often caused by a network loop or a malfunctioning connected device. Clearing the counter via ctBroadcastPeakBroadcastClear and watching whether the rate climbs again helps confirm whether the storm is ongoing or was a one-time event.

What Can Be Monitored

  • total broadcast frames per port
  • peak broadcast rate
  • time of peak broadcast rate
  • broadcast threshold configuration
  • broadcast storm control status
