Category: DOCSIS and Cable, Network Interfaces

Description: Defines managed objects for subscriber management on DOCSIS cable modem termination systems, facilitating protection against address and service spoofing.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring DOCS-IETF-SUBMGT-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is DOCS-IETF-SUBMGT-MIB?

DOCS-IETF-SUBMGT-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 4036) defining CMTS-centric subscriber management objects for DOCSIS-compliant Cable Modem Termination Systems. It exposes configuration objects controlling which IP addresses and protocols subscriber cable modems' CPE devices are permitted to use, protecting against address and service spoofing on the cable access network. Though primarily a security/configuration MIB, it supports operational status monitoring: docsSubMgtCpeControlActive and docsSubMgtCpeControlLearnable show whether CPE IP-learning/control is enabled per cable modem, docsSubMgtCpeControlMaxCpeIp exposes the configured CPE address limit, and docsSubMgtCpeControlLastReset/docsSubMgtCpeControlReset let an operator see or trigger a reset of a modem's learned CPE list, reflecting the subscriber-management software state on the CMTS for each modem. It depends on DOCSIS's underlying cable-modem/CMTS MIB framework for modem indexing and is referenced from the broader DOCSIS MIB set. It is deployed by cable operators on CMTS headend equipment to enforce and monitor per-subscriber IP/CPE control policy across the DOCSIS access network. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the DOCS-IETF-SUBMGT-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOCS-IETF-SUBMGT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 4036), not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • DOCSIS Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll docsSubMgtCpeControlTable/docsSubMgtCpeControlEntry for a given cable modem to check docsSubMgtCpeControlActive and docsSubMgtCpeControlMaxCpeIp, and cross-reference the learned addresses in docsSubMgtCpeIpTable/docsSubMgtCpeIpEntry; if the number of learned CPE IPs approaches docsSubMgtCpeControlMaxCpeIp or docsSubMgtCpeControlLastReset shows a recent unexpected reset, it could indicate a spoofing attempt or misbehaving CPE device being blocked by the subscriber management policy.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CPE control active/learnable status
  • maximum CPE IP addresses per modem
  • learned CPE IP addresses
  • CPE control reset time
  • subscriber management policy defaults

RFC description

CMTS subscriber management MIB for controlling IP addresses and protocols on cable modems in DOCSIS systems.

Start monitoring DOCSIS CMTS (subscriber/CPE management, vendor-neutral IETF standard RFC 4036) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
