Category: Network Interfaces

Description: Manages PPP link configuration and negotiation status on AI-series network access devices for WAN connectivity.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is AIPPP-MIB?

AIPPP-MIB is a vendor-specific module for AI-series network access/remote-access devices (dial and WAN aggregation gear), extending the standard PPP MIBs with vendor-specific link options. It exposes configuration and negotiation-status data for PPP links, including NCP protocol options, IP addressing negotiated over the link (source, destination, subnet, broadcast), and security/authentication settings such as RADIUS and local security options. Its main monitoring value is software/configuration status rather than hardware health: administrators use it to confirm that a given PPP link has negotiated the expected IP parameters and security mode, and to check whether multilink PPP is bonded correctly. The module explicitly supplements the standard PPP MIBs, depending on them for baseline PPP link state. It is typically deployed in dial-up or leased-line WAN access equipment where PPP is used to establish point-to-point connections to remote sites or dial-in users, with the AIPPP-MIB MIB serving as the vendor reference for these PPP link extensions.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AIPPP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • AI-series WAN access/remote-access router or dial concentrator

Monitoring Examples

An operator would index into aiPPPTable/aiPPPEntry by aipppLinkNumber and inspect aipppIpSrcAddr, aipppIpDestAddr, and aipppIpSubnetMask to confirm the negotiated IP addressing for a given PPP session. Checking aipppLocalSecurityOption and aipppRemoteSecurityOption reveals whether the expected authentication scheme (e.g. RADIUS via aipppLocalRadiusOption) is in effect on that link. If aipppMultilinkOption shows multilink is enabled but only one physical link is up, that flags a bonding/negotiation failure worth investigating.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PPP link negotiated IP address/subnet
  • PPP NCP protocol option
  • local/remote security (authentication) option
  • RADIUS option status
  • multilink PPP bonding status
