Description: GE MDS serial interface MIB providing objects for configuring and monitoring RS-232/RS-485 serial port connectivity on GE MDS devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is MDS-SERIAL-MIB?
MDS-SERIAL-MIB is a GE MDS (Microwave Data Systems) enterprise MIB providing objects for configuring and monitoring RS-232/RS-485 serial port connectivity on GE MDS wireless/radio telemetry devices, structured around a terminal-server-style serial port model. It defines per-serial-port configuration (description, enabled/disabled state) and traffic counters for both the IP side and the serial side of each port. It is directly useful for monitoring hardware/interface status: the enabled flag shows whether a serial port is administratively active, while the IP/serial Tx/Rx packet and byte counters reveal whether data is actually flowing between the radio's IP network side and the attached serial device, letting an admin detect a stalled or silent serial link. It is used alongside the vendor's radio/link-layer MIBs for the wireless transport, with this MIB focused specifically on the serial pass-through interface. It is deployed on GE MDS licensed/unlicensed wireless radios and gateways providing serial-to-IP connectivity for SCADA/telemetry systems in utility and industrial networks. Engineers can download the MDS-SERIAL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MDS-SERIAL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- GE MDS wireless radio/gateway (serial-to-IP)
Monitoring Examples
An admin polls mSerTermServerStatusTable/mSerTermServerStatusEntry fields such as mSerTermServerEnabled and mSerTermServerDescription to confirm a given serial port is enabled and correctly labeled. Comparing mSerTermServerSerialTxPackets/mSerTermServerSerialRxPackets against mSerTermServerIpTxPackets/mSerTermServerIpRxPackets detects a stalled serial link where IP traffic is flowing but no bytes are reaching the attached SCADA/RTU device. mSerTermServerIpTxBytes and mSerTermServerSerialRxBytes give byte-level throughput on each side of the port for deeper traffic analysis.
What Can Be Monitored
- serial port enabled/disabled state
- serial port description
- IP-side Tx/Rx packet and byte counts
- serial-side Tx/Rx packet and byte counts
