Category: SNA and Legacy Protocols, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Manages Cabletron DLSw (Data Link Switching) configuration for SNA/NetBIOS transport over IP networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTRON-DLSW-MIB?

CTRON-DLSW-MIB is a Cabletron (Enterasys) enterprise MIB that manages Data Link Switching (DLSw), a protocol that tunnels legacy SNA and NetBIOS traffic over an IP network, typically to let older mainframe or LAN-based applications communicate across modern routed networks. It exposes configuration objects for DLSw peer connections and virtual ring numbers, along with operational status and uptime for the DLSw process itself. For software status monitoring, ctdlswAdminStatus and ctdlswOperStatus reveal whether the DLSw service is administratively enabled and actually running, while ctdlswUpTime tracks how long that DLSw process has been up, useful for spotting unexpected restarts. It builds on the standard DLSw architecture (RFC 1795/2166) and is used alongside device interface and port MIBs, since DLSw runs over specific physical/logical ports. It is deployed on Cabletron/Enterasys routers or switches acting as DLSw peers bridging legacy SNA/NetBIOS traffic between remote sites over an IP WAN, and a CTRON-DLSW-MIB download is typically obtained from Enterasys/Extreme Networks archives to load into a MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-DLSW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron/Enterasys router or switch running DLSw

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ctdlswAdminStatus and ctdlswOperStatus to confirm the DLSw process is enabled and actually operational, and check ctdlswUpTime to see if the service has recently restarted unexpectedly. Walking ctdlswPortTable entries (via ctdlswPort/ctdlswNode objects) shows which ports and DLSw peer nodes are configured and their per-node connection state. A mismatch between an enabled ctdlswAdminStatus and a down ctdlswOperStatus on a given port would flag a failed DLSw peer connection needing investigation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DLSw admin/operational status
  • DLSw process uptime
  • DLSw port table entries
  • DLSw peer node status
  • virtual ring number configuration
