What Is CTRON-DOWNLOAD-MIB?
CTRON-DOWNLOAD-MIB is a Cabletron Systems proprietary MIB for managing firmware and configuration file downloads to Cabletron network devices, typically over TFTP. It exposes objects for initiating a download, specifying the TFTP server address and filename, and tracking the transfer's progress and completion/error status. It is used operationally rather than for continuous hardware monitoring, but its status objects let an administrator monitor the software update process itself, confirming a firmware image transferred successfully, detecting a failed or timed-out download, and verifying the resulting image/configuration version after a reboot. It commonly depends on standard TFTP conventions and is invoked alongside a device's system/entity MIBs to correlate the new software version with reported entity information after the download completes. It was deployed across Cabletron/Enterasys switches and hubs during firmware upgrade or configuration backup/restore operations in enterprise network management. Engineers can download the CTRON-DOWNLOAD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-DOWNLOAD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cabletron/Enterasys switch or hub
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would set download control objects to point to a TFTP server IP and firmware filename, then poll a status object (analogous to ctDownloadStatus) to watch the transfer progress from in-progress to complete or failed. A failed status combined with no change in reported software version would indicate a network reachability problem to the TFTP server or a corrupted image file. This MIB is typically scripted into automated firmware-upgrade tools that push new images to many Cabletron switches and confirm success before proceeding to the next device.
What Can Be Monitored
- firmware download status
- TFTP transfer progress
- download success/failure
- target image filename
- software version after update
