Category: Routing Protocols, SNA and Legacy Protocols, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Manages Cabletron IPX routing protocol configuration, SAP tables, routing entries, and Novell NetWare support.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTRON-IPX-ROUTER-MIB?

CTRON-IPX-ROUTER-MIB is a Cabletron (Enterasys) enterprise MIB that manages IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) routing, the legacy Novell NetWare network-layer protocol, including SAP (Service Advertising Protocol) tables, IPX routing table entries, and router-level configuration. It exposes configuration objects for the IPX router's identity and administrative controls, along with operational counters such as forwarded-packet counts and operational uptime for the IPX forwarding process. For software status monitoring, nwIpxSysAdminStatus/nwIpxSysOperStatus reveal whether the IPX routing process is enabled and actually running, and nwIpxSysOperationalTimel plus nwIpxFwdCtrOperationalTime track how long the router/forwarding counters have been accumulating, useful for spotting unexpected resets. It is a largely self-contained legacy protocol MIB with no strong dependency on other IETF MIBs, reflecting IPX/NetWare's origin as a non-IP protocol suite bridged onto Cabletron routing hardware. It is deployed on older Cabletron/Enterasys routers or Layer 3 switches that still carry legacy Novell NetWare IPX traffic within an enterprise network. Engineers can download the CTRON-IPX-ROUTER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-IPX-ROUTER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron/Enterasys router or Layer 3 switch (legacy Novell NetWare IPX support)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll nwIpxSysAdminStatus and nwIpxSysOperStatus to confirm the IPX routing process is administratively enabled and operationally up, and check nwIpxSysOperationalTimel to see how long it has run since the last nwIpxSysAdminReset. Polling nwIpxFwdCtrInPkts alongside nwIpxFwdCtrOperationalTime shows packet-forwarding throughput trends for the IPX forwarding engine, and a sudden reset of nwIpxFwdCtrOperationalTime near zero would flag an unexpected restart of IPX forwarding. The nwIpxSysVersion object also lets the admin confirm which IPX MIB/software revision the router is running.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IPX router admin/operational status
  • IPX forwarding process uptime
  • IPX inbound packet counts
  • IPX router software/MIB version
  • SAP and IPX routing table entries
