Category: Device Management, Vendor: Cisco Devices

Description: Manages Cisco WAN network topology information including node and trunk discovery on MGX platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-WAN-TOPOLOGY-MIB?

CISCO-WAN-TOPOLOGY-MIB manages network topology discovery information for Cisco WAN switching nodes (e.g., MGX platforms), including which node acts as the Gateway Node responsible for building and maintaining a topology database of the WAN network. It exposes per-node information such as node ID, name, gateway flag, and primary IP interface details, along with the timestamp of the last topology database change. Its monitoring role centers on software-level network state: cwtGatewayNodeOperStatus and cwtDBLastChange let an operator confirm the topology database is being actively maintained and that the designated gateway node is operational, with a stale cwtDBLastChange or unexpected operational status indicating topology discovery has stalled, which could leave routing or provisioning tools working from outdated network maps. It is Cisco-specific to WAN switch topology discovery, with no direct IETF MIB dependency. It is deployed in Cisco MGX/BPX WAN switch networks where centralized topology awareness supports provisioning and preferred-route features, making the CISCO-WAN-TOPOLOGY-MIB MIB a standard reference for confirming gateway-node health across those deployments.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-WAN-TOPOLOGY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MGX/BPX WAN switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check cwtGatewayNodeOperStatus to confirm the node designated via cwtGatewayAdminStatus is actively serving as the topology Gateway Node, and monitor cwtDBLastChange to ensure the topology database is updating as nodes join or leave. Walking cwtNodeInfoTable by cwtIndex reveals each known node's cwtNodeId, cwtNodeName, and cwtPrimIPAddrType, letting an operator detect a node that dropped out of the topology or reports a stale/incorrect primary IP interface.

What Can Be Monitored

  • gateway node admin/operational status
  • topology database last-change timestamp
  • node ID and name inventory
  • primary IP interface per node
