Description: Manages Cisco WAN NCDP clock distribution for network-wide timing synchronization on MGX platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-WAN-NCDP-MIB?

The CISCO-WAN-NCDP-MIB manages the Network Clock Distribution Protocol (NCDP), which distributes a synchronized timing reference across Cisco MGX ATM WAN switches. It exposes configuration and status data including the clock distribution method, node stratum level, message and hold-time intervals, the current root clock source, and a table of configured clock sources with descriptions. Its monitoring value is centered on timing/synchronization health: the current root clock source and node stratum reveal whether a switch is synchronized to the expected network clock or has fallen back to a lower-quality source, while the recorded change reason and timestamp flag recent clock-source switchover events that can indicate an upstream timing fault. It is specific to Cisco MGX ATM switch clocking architecture and complements external SONET/SDH or BITS timing references feeding the network. It is deployed on Cisco MGX 8000-series ATM WAN switches in networks requiring synchronized clocking, such as those carrying TDM/CES traffic, and administrators can download the CISCO-WAN-NCDP-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for clock-health monitoring.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-WAN-NCDP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MGX 8000-series ATM WAN switches

Monitoring Examples

An engineer polls cwnRootClockSource and cwnNodeStratum to confirm a switch is synchronized to the expected network clock at the correct stratum level, and checks cwnClockSourceTable/cwnClockSourceEntry for each cwnClockSourceDesc to see available clock sources. Reviewing cwnChangeReason with cwnChangeTimeStamp after an unexpected cwnRootClockSource change helps diagnose whether an upstream clock source failure caused a switchover, which could explain slips or errors in CES circuits riding the switch.

What Can Be Monitored

  • current root clock source
  • node stratum level
  • clock source table/descriptions
  • clock switchover reason and timestamp
  • message interval/hold time settings
