Description: Manages VLAN membership assignments for non-trunk bridge ports and provides information about VLAN Membership Policy Servers (VMPS).

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-VLAN-MEMBERSHIP-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-VLAN-MEMBERSHIP-MIB?

The CISCO-VLAN-MEMBERSHIP-MIB manages VLAN Membership Policy Server (VMPS) configuration and dynamic VLAN assignment for non-trunk bridge ports, part of Cisco's VLAN Architecture v2.0 for Catalyst switches. It exposes configuration data including VQP protocol version, retry counts, reconfirm intervals, a table of configured VMPS servers, and a summary table of per-port VLAN membership. Its monitoring value lies in software/configuration status: the reconfirm process and its result reveal whether dynamically-assigned ports successfully re-validated their VLAN, and the active/primary VMPS server field shows whether the switch has failed over from its preferred server. It depends implicitly on the bridge/port model shared with BRIDGE-MIB and on Cisco's VTP domain concept. It is deployed on Catalyst switches in networks using dynamic (VMPS-based) rather than static VLAN assignment. This is a heavily searched Cisco MIB, since cisco-vlan-membership-mib is the standard reference for monitoring VLAN Membership Policy Server (VMPS) assignments on Cisco switches via SNMP.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-VLAN-MEMBERSHIP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst switches

Monitoring Examples

An engineer monitors vmVmpsReconfirmResult after triggering vmVmpsReconfirm to verify all dynamically-assigned ports successfully re-validated their VLAN with the VMPS server, and polls vmVmpsTable/vmVmpsEntry to see each configured vmVmpsIpAddress and which is vmVmpsPrimary. Checking vmVmpsCurrent against vmVmpsPrimary reveals whether the switch has failed over to a secondary VMPS server, while vmMembershipSummaryTable gives a snapshot of port-to-VLAN assignments to catch stale or misconfigured mappings.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VMPS server reachability and reconfirmation status
  • active vs. primary VMPS server
  • VQP protocol version and retry settings
  • dynamic VLAN membership per port
  • reconfirm interval and last result

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using vmVQPQueries OID:

Select a Cisco Catalyst switch (VMPS/dynamic VLAN assignment) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type vmVQPQueries into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The total number of VQP requests sent by this device to all VMPS since last system re-initialization. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
