Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Cisco Devices

Description: Manages Cisco VLAN translation, enabling mapping of one VLAN ID to another on trunk or access ports.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-VLAN-TRANSLATION-MIB?

CISCO-VLAN-TRANSLATION-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB (rooted at ciscoMgmt 411) that manages VLAN translation — the ability of a switch to remap traffic between one VLAN ID and another at Layer 2 on trunk or access ports. It defines two mutually-exclusive configuration mechanisms: device-wide mappings in cvtGlobalTranslationTable (indexed by cvtGlobalOriginalVlan, with cvtGlobalTranslatedVlan giving the target VLAN, cvtGlobalTranslationEffective indicating whether the mapping is actually functioning, and cvtGlobalTranslationStatus as the RowStatus lifecycle control), and per-port mappings in cvtPortConfigTable/cvtPortTranslationTable (cvtPortTranslationEnabled, cvtPortOriginalVlan, cvtPortTranslatedVlan, cvtPortTranslationStatus) indexed by ifIndex. Both tables enforce a maximum-entries cap (cvtGlobalTranslationMax, cvtPortTranslationMax) and a rule that global and port-based translation configurations cannot coexist on the same device. Because it is a configuration/control-plane MIB rather than a traffic-counter MIB, monitoring it mainly reveals whether VLAN mapping rules are active and consistent with the intended trunk topology, which matters for diagnosing traffic that unexpectedly lands on the wrong VLAN; it depends on the underlying Q-BRIDGE-MIB VlanIndex type and IF-MIB ifIndex for its indexing. It is deployed on Cisco switches that bridge hybrid VLAN topologies together, and the CISCO-VLAN-TRANSLATION-MIB MIB is the reference for decoding these translation tables in a MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-VLAN-TRANSLATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst-family switches supporting VLAN translation between trunk/access ports

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls cvtGlobalTranslationTable to confirm which cvtGlobalOriginalVlan values map to which cvtGlobalTranslatedVlan on trunk ports, checking cvtGlobalTranslationEffective to verify the mapping is live; an entry with cvtGlobalTranslationStatus active but cvtGlobalTranslationEffective false would indicate a configured VLAN translation rule that isn't actually being applied, likely because the port is no longer a Layer 2 trunk.

What Can Be Monitored

  • global VLAN-to-VLAN translation table entries
  • per-port VLAN translation table entries
  • translation effective/active status flags
  • maximum configurable translation entry limits
  • row lifecycle status for translation entries
