What Is CISCO-CIPTG-MIB?

CISCO-CIPTG-MIB is a Cisco MIB for managing Transmission Groups (TGs) on the Channel Interface Processor (CIP) within Cisco Mainframe Channel Connection (CMCC) environments, which connect Cisco routers to IBM mainframe SNA/APPN networks. It exposes configuration data for LLC-based transmission groups, including LAN type, adapter number, local/remote SAP and MAC address bindings, and row-status objects for managing TG entries, along with an operational-state table for runtime status. Its monitoring value is centered on SNA/mainframe connectivity health: administrators check cipTgLlcOperState to confirm a transmission group between the router and mainframe channel is operationally up, and verify cipTgLlcAdminLSAP/cipTgLlcAdminRSAP and cipTgLlcAdminRMAC settings match the expected mainframe-side configuration, catching misconfigurations that would prevent SNA traffic from flowing. An operator would walk cipTgLlcAdminTable / cipTgLlcAdminEntry to verify cipTgLlcAdminLSAP, cipTgLlcAdminRSAP, and cipTgLlcAdminRMAC match the mainframe channel's expected configuration, then check the corresponding cipTgLlcOperTable entry's cipTgLlcOperState to confirm the transmission group is operationally active. A TG stuck in a down operational state despite correct admin settings would point to a physical channel or mainframe-side connectivity problem.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cipTgLlcStatsIFramesIn OID:

Select a Cisco routers with CIP mainframe channel connectivity (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cipTgLlcStatsIFramesIn into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of LLC I-Frames received by this LLC connection TG from the remote network node. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
