What Is CISCO-STP-EXTENSIONS-MIB?

CISCO-STP-EXTENSIONS-MIB manages Cisco's proprietary extensions to the IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol, including PortFast, UplinkFast, BackboneFast, and Per-VLAN Spanning Tree Plus (PVST+). It belongs to the Layer 2 switching/network-resiliency technology area and exposes configuration and event-counter data for these fast-convergence features on a per-switch and per-VLAN basis. Its monitoring value is centered on network topology stability and software feature status: UplinkFast transition counts and station-learning frame rates reveal how often the switch has had to fail over an uplink, which is a strong indicator of physical link flaps or topology instability upstream. It is explicitly built as an extension to the IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol standard, on which all of its objects conceptually depend. It is typically deployed on Cisco Catalyst switches in access/distribution layers using PVST+ and Cisco's fast-convergence STP enhancements, all defined within the CISCO-STP-EXTENSIONS-MIB MIB.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll stpxUplinkFastEnabled and stpxUplinkFastTransitions to see whether UplinkFast is active on a switch and how many uplink failovers have occurred, where a rapidly increasing transition count signals repeated uplink flapping. Checking stpxUplinkStationLearningGenRate and stpxUplinkStationLearningFrames alongside stpxPreferredVlansTable entries (stpxPreferredVlansMap/Map2k/Map3k/Map4k) would show whether MAC-address relearning after a switchover is proceeding at the expected rate for the configured preferred VLANs, helping confirm convergence completed cleanly rather than leaving stale forwarding entries.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using stpxUplinkFastTransitions OID:

Select a Cisco Catalyst switch (STP extensions) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type stpxUplinkFastTransitions into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The cumulative number of UplinkFast transitions (from the STP 'Blocking' state directly to the STP 'Forwarding' state). On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in transitions), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
