Category: Device Management, Vendor: RADLAN/Cisco SB
Description: Monitors and configures switch stacking topology, unit roles, and interconnects on Cisco Small Business stackable switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCOSB-STACK-MIB?
CISCOSB-STACK-MIB manages and monitors the stacking topology of Cisco Small Business stackable switches, covering which physical unit is acting as the active/master unit, each unit's stacking mode, and the physical interconnect ports that link stack members together. It exposes hardware-oriented status objects including the current active unit ID, per-unit stacking mode (standalone vs. stacked), unit MAC addresses, and post-reset role/mode predictions, making it directly useful for tracking the operational health and role of each physical switch in a stack. This is squarely a hardware-status MIB: a change in the active unit ID, a unit dropping out of hybrid/interconnect pairing, or an unexpected mode change after a reset are all signals of a hardware or cabling fault in the stack. It complements standard entity and interface MIBs by adding stack-specific role and topology detail not covered by generic IETF modules. It is used in Cisco Small Business network deployments where multiple physical switches are stacked to act as a single logical switch. Engineers can download the CISCOSB-STACK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-STACK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco Small Business stackable switches
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polls rlStackCurrentUnitId to identify which physical unit is currently the stack master, and rlStackUnitMode to confirm whether a given unit is operating in standalone or stacked mode. The rlStackHybridTable and its rlStackHybridPortsPair objects show which physical ports form the stack interconnect; if a unit's hybrid pairing disappears or rlStackActiveUnitIdAfterReset shows an unexpected value following a reboot, that's a strong indicator of a broken stack cable or failed unit.
What Can Be Monitored
- active/master stack unit identity
- per-unit stacking mode (standalone/stacked)
- stack unit MAC address
- stack interconnect port pairings
- unit role/mode predicted after reset
