Category: Net-SNMP and Linux, Network Interfaces

Description: Provides MIB-II standard objects (interfaces, IP, TCP, UDP) as implemented by the FreeBSD bsnmpd agent.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BEGEMOT-MIB2-MIB?

BEGEMOT-MIB2-MIB is a FreeBSD bsnmpd extension adding vendor-specific controls around the standard MIB-II objects (interfaces, IP, TCP, UDP) implemented by the "begemot" SNMP agent. It exposes interface-related objects layered on the standard ifTable, such as a reported maximum interface speed and polling behavior controls. Its monitoring value is in interface hardware performance visibility: begemotIfPoll and begemotIfForcePoll affect how promptly interface counters are refreshed, and begemotIfMaxspeed affects the reported link-speed baseline used when calculating utilization from standard interface counters. It is a direct extension of the standard IETF MIB-II/IF-MIB rather than an independent module. It is used on FreeBSD systems and FreeBSD-based network appliances running bsnmpd for standard interface/IP/TCP/UDP monitoring. Engineers can download the BEGEMOT-MIB2-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BEGEMOT-MIB2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • FreeBSD-based host or appliance running bsnmpd

Monitoring Examples

An admin sets begemotIfForcePoll to force the agent to actively re-poll interface counters rather than rely on cached updates, and checks begemotIfMaxspeed against the actual throughput reported in the standard ifTable/ifXTable. A mismatch between begemotIfMaxspeed and real link speed could reveal a misconfigured or auto-negotiation-limited interface, while begemotIfPoll settings affect how promptly interface counter changes show up in monitoring.

What Can Be Monitored

  • interface maximum speed setting
  • interface polling enable/disable
  • forced interface poll trigger
  • standard MIB-II interface/IP/TCP/UDP counters

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using begemotIfMaxspeed OID:

Select a FreeBSD hosts/appliances running the Begemot bsnmpd SNMP agent as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type begemotIfMaxspeed into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The speed of the fastest interface in ifTable in bps. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in bps), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
