What Is AWCVX-MIB?

AWCVX-MIB ("Aironet Wireless Communications, VxWorks") is a vendor-specific SNMP module for Cisco Aironet 802.11 wireless LAN devices, covering both Access Points and Wireless Access Bridges running the VxWorks embedded OS. It exposes device identity and software information (VxWorks version, Aironet software version, build/creation date, device ID), service-enablement configuration (HTTP, Telnet, SNMP, DNS resolver, SNTP), and 802.11 radio/MAC layer management objects. For monitoring purposes it is explicitly software/firmware-status oriented -- vxWorksVersion and awcVxVersion identify the running OS/firmware build, while enableHTTP/enableTelnet/enableSNMP/enableSNTP reveal which management services are active, useful for both operational status and security posture checks on the AP. It depends on IEEE 802.11 dot11 MIB conventions for its radio/MAC objects alongside Cisco's Aironet enterprise tree. It is deployed on Cisco Aironet access points and wireless bridges in enterprise or campus 802.11 wireless LAN deployments. Engineers can download the AWCVX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

A wireless administrator would poll awcVxVersion and vxWorksVersion to confirm firmware currency across a fleet of access points, flagging devices that need an upgrade before a known bug or vulnerability is patched. enableSNTP and enableDnsResolver would be checked to confirm time sync and DNS services are correctly enabled for reliable logging and authentication, while awcDot11smt/awcDot11mac objects provide the underlying 802.11 radio and MAC-layer statistics needed to diagnose client connectivity or interference issues on a given AP.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using awcEventCntSeverityNULL OID:

Select a Cisco Aironet 802.11 wireless access points/bridge (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type awcEventCntSeverityNULL into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports nULL message counter. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
