Category: Cisco Devices, Device Management, Hardware and Environment

Description: Extends the ENTITY-MIB entPhysicalTable with Cisco-specific information for modules that have a CPU, RAM/NVRAM, and configuration register.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-ENTITY-EXT-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-ENTITY-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-ENTITY-EXT-MIB is a Cisco proprietary extension to the IETF ENTITY-MIB (RFC 2737), adding Cisco-specific attributes to the entPhysicalTable for physical entities classified as "module" that contain their own CPU, RAM, and NVRAM. It exposes data about processor modules' memory resources, non-volatile configuration storage, configuration register settings, and available bootable software images. The MIB is explicitly built for monitoring hardware and software status of modular Cisco devices: administrators can track processor RAM utilization and overflow conditions, NVRAM capacity and usage, the current and next-boot configuration register value, and the list of boot images available to a module. Because it extends entPhysicalTable, it depends directly on the ENTITY-MIB and assumes an entity-based physical inventory already populated by the agent. It is typically deployed on modular Cisco routers and switches with field-replaceable processor/supervisor modules, serving as the entry point for SNMP managers and CLI tools that need per-module hardware and boot-configuration visibility. Engineers cross-referencing entPhysicalTable inventory details with a device's boot configuration often keep the cisco-entity-ext-mib reference on hand for exactly this purpose.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ENTITY-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco modular routers/switches with processor supervisor modules

Monitoring Examples

A network operations team could poll ceExtPhysicalProcessorTable/ceExtPhysicalProcessorEntry to read ceExtProcessorRam and ceExtHCProcessorRam for each supervisor module, alerting if ceExtProcessorRamOverflow indicates the counter has wrapped on a high-memory chassis. Polling ceExtNVRAMSize against ceExtNVRAMUsed reveals when a module's saved configuration is approaching capacity, risking failed config saves. The ceExtConfigRegTable exposes ceExtConfigRegister and ceExtConfigRegNext, letting an admin detect a mismatched next-boot configuration register that would cause the device to bypass startup-config on the following reload. ceExtSysBootImageList shows which IOS images are eligible to boot, useful for auditing image consistency across redundant supervisors.

What Can Be Monitored

  • processor RAM usage
  • NVRAM size and utilization
  • configuration register (current and next-boot)
  • available boot images
  • RAM overflow condition
