What Is ATMF-CES?

ATMF-CES is an ATM Forum standards-based, vendor-neutral MIB implementing the Circuit Emulation Service Interworking Function (CES IWF) version 2.0, used to carry constant-bit-rate (CBR) TDM traffic such as T1/E1 circuits transparently over an ATM network. It exposes per-circuit configuration and operational data through the atmfCESConfTable, covering ATM addressing (VPI/VCI), CBR service type, clocking mode, channel-associated signaling (CAS), buffer sizing, and cell-delay-variation tolerances. From a monitoring standpoint it is primarily a configuration/performance MIB for the emulated circuit's health: cell-delay-variation and buffer-size settings reveal whether jitter buffering is adequately tuned, while clock-mode and CAS settings confirm the circuit is correctly synchronized and signaling is passed through as expected—faults here manifest as circuit drops or bit errors rather than classic CPU/memory alarms. It depends on the broader ATM Forum MIB framework and interoperates with standard ATM interface MIBs for the underlying physical/ATM layer. It is typically deployed on ATM edge switches or CES interworking function devices that emulate leased-line/TDM circuits across an ATM backbone, and because the MIB is standards-based rather than proprietary, ATMF-CES SNMP polling scripts can typically be reused across ATM equipment from different vendors.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll atmfCESConfTable/atmfCESConfEntry, checking atmfCESAtmVpi/atmfCESAtmVci to confirm the correct ATM virtual circuit mapping and atmfCESCbrClockMode to verify clock synchronization is set appropriately. Watching atmfCESCdvRxT (cell delay variation) alongside atmfCESBufMaxSize reveals whether the jitter buffer is undersized for observed network delay variation, which would manifest as choppy TDM circuit quality. atmfCESCas indicates whether channel-associated signaling is enabled, important for voice circuits riding the emulated CBR service.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using atmfCESRetryTimer OID:

Select a device implementing ATMF-CES as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type atmfCESRetryTimer into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports, in seconds, how long until the device next retries establishing this circuit-emulation SVC connection. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the timer has been counting down (non-zero) for an unusually long stretch of consecutive polls, which would suggest the SVC is repeatedly failing to connect. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
