Category: ATM, Domain: WAN/TDM, Technology: Time Synchronization, Vendor: Fore Systems (ATM)

Description: Fore Systems timing MIB providing clock source selection and synchronization configuration for network timing on ForeRunner ATM switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Fore-TIMING-MIB?

Fore-TIMING-MIB is a FORE Systems proprietary MIB governing clock source selection and network timing synchronization on ForeRunner ATM switches, centered on the Timing and Clock Module (TCM) hardware. It exposes hardware identification (type, version), PLL lock status, overall operation status, and the currently selected timing reference, along with requested versus operating timing modes and mode failover behavior. This is squarely a hardware-status monitoring MIB: administrators watch tcmPllStatus and tcmOperationStatus to detect a failed or unlocked timing module, and tcmCurrentTimingRef/tcmModeFailover to see whether the switch has failed over to a backup clock source. It stands alone as a FORE-proprietary module without dependency on standard timing MIBs. It is deployed in ATM switches requiring precise network clock synchronization, such as carrier ATM backbones sensitive to clock slips. Engineers can download the Fore-TIMING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-TIMING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Fore Systems/Marconi ForeRunner ATM switch

Monitoring Examples

Polling tcmTable/tcmEntry, an admin checks tcmPllStatus for PLL lock loss and tcmOperationStatus for overall module health, both strong indicators of a failing timing card. Comparing tcmRequestedTimingMode to tcmOperatingTimingMode, along with tcmModeFailover, reveals whether the switch has silently failed over from its primary clock reference (tcmCurrentTimingRef) to a backup source, an event that can cause cell/frame slips if left unnoticed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PLL lock status
  • timing module operation status
  • current timing reference source
  • requested vs operating timing mode
  • timing mode failover events
