Category: Nokia Optical Transport

Description: Manages Nokia Tropic optical transport hierarchy objects for OTH framing and overhead monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TROPIC-OTH-MIB?

TROPIC-OTH-MIB is part of Nokia's Tropic DWDM MIB suite, covering the Optical Transport Hierarchy (OTH/OTN) layer responsible for framing and overhead management of client signals mapped into optical transport frames. It exposes objects related to OTN framing structure and overhead monitoring data. Its monitoring role centers on hardware/signal status: overhead monitoring bytes surface transmission errors, alarms, and performance-monitoring counters at the OTN framing layer, which is critical for detecting bit errors or signal degradation before they affect client traffic. It is part of the same Tropic MIB family as TROPIC-OCH-MIB and TROPIC-AMPLIFIER-MIB, together modeling the full DWDM transport stack. It is deployed on Nokia DWDM optical transport network elements in service-provider optical backbone networks. Engineers can download the TROPIC-OTH-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TROPIC-OTH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia (Alcatel-Lucent) Tropic DWDM optical transport network element

Monitoring Examples

No sample object names were provided for this module. Based on its description as covering OTH framing and overhead attributes, an admin would typically poll OTN overhead/performance-monitoring objects to detect bit-error-rate anomalies or framing alarms, which would indicate a degrading optical signal or a fiber/transponder issue upstream of the affected network element.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OTN framing status
  • overhead monitoring bytes
  • OTN performance/alarm counters
