Category: Nokia Optical Transport

Description: Manages Nokia Tropic line card inventory, configuration, operational state, and hardware status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TROPIC-CARD-MIB?

TROPIC-CARD-MIB is a private vendor MIB from Nokia (formerly Alcatel-Lucent) for its Tropic optical transport (WDM) product line, managing the line card component -- the pluggable/slotted modules that provide transport interfaces within a Tropic network element. It exposes inventory data (card type, serial/part numbers), configuration parameters, and operational state and hardware status for each installed card. In monitoring terms this is a hardware-status MIB in the classic sense -- tracking whether a card is present, its administrative and operational state, and fault conditions, which is exactly the kind of data used to detect a failed, missing, or degraded line card in an optical shelf before it causes a service outage. It works in conjunction with the broader Tropic MIB family, notably TROPIC-SHELF-MIB (which houses the cards) and the notification MIBs that report card-level alarms. It is deployed in Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent Tropic WDM optical transport network elements used by carriers and large enterprises for long-haul or metro optical transport. Engineers can download the TROPIC-CARD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TROPIC-CARD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia (formerly Alcatel-Lucent) Tropic optical transport line card / network element

Monitoring Examples

No sample object names were provided for this module, but consistent with its stated purpose an admin would poll a card inventory/status table to confirm each slot's expected card type is present and reporting an operational (in-service) state, with a card showing a degraded or out-of-service operational state, or an unexpected card-type mismatch, indicating a hardware fault or provisioning error requiring physical intervention.
