Category: Nokia Optical Transport

Description: Manages Nokia Tropic Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON) control plane configuration and topology.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TROPIC-ASON-MIB?

TROPIC-ASON-MIB is a vendor MIB from Nokia's Tropic optical transport product line defining types and objects related to Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON) control-plane functionality. It is expected to expose control-plane configuration and topology-related data governing how the optical network dynamically establishes and reroutes light-paths. Its monitoring value would be focused on the software/control-plane status of the optical network, such as whether ASON-controlled paths are established as expected, which matters for detecting control-plane faults that could affect network resiliency and automatic rerouting after a fiber cut. It logically depends on / complements TROPIC-ACCESSPORT-MIB and other Tropic MIBs that describe the physical ports over which ASON paths run. It is deployed in carrier-grade optical transport networks running Nokia Tropic equipment where dynamic, control-plane-driven optical path switching is used for resiliency. Engineers can download the TROPIC-ASON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TROPIC-ASON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia Tropic DWDM optical transport system with ASON control plane

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided for this module, so specific object/table names cannot be confirmed, but based on the description an admin would expect objects describing ASON control-plane path/topology state (e.g., path status, protection switching state). Polling such data would be used to confirm automatic protection switching functioned correctly after a fiber fault. This remains a general characterization since no concrete object names were supplied.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ASON path/connection status
  • control-plane topology state
  • protection switching status
