What Is TIMETRA-PIM-SNOOPING-MIB?

This is a Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent proprietary SNMP MIB that manages and provisions PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast) snooping extensions on SROS devices, a Layer 2 feature letting a switch inspect PIM messages to forward multicast traffic only to interested receiver ports. It exposes per-interface configuration and state such as designated router (DR) election type/identity, hold time, and tracking support. It is used to monitor the software/protocol health of Layer 2 multicast forwarding: admin versus operational state of PIM snooping, DR uptime, and whether the current DR selection is stable, helping detect flapping or misconfigured multicast topologies. It depends on the underlying PIM protocol standard and companion TIMETRA multicast MIBs for full routed PIM state. It is deployed on Nokia 7750 SR / 7210 SAS access and aggregation switches carrying multicast services such as IPTV in metro/access networks. Engineers can download the TIMETRA-PIM-SNOOPING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIMETRA-PIM-SNOOPING-MIB. Monitoring Examples

An operator polls tmnxPimSnpgGeneralTable/tmnxPimSnpgGeneralEntry, comparing tmnxPimSnpgGenAdminState against tmnxPimSnpgGenOperState, where a down operational state despite admin-up indicates the snooping instance failed to activate. tmnxPimSnpgGenUpTime shows how long the current state has persisted, useful for spotting a flapping designated router. tmnxPimSnpgGenDRType and tmnxPimSnpgGenDR identify which node is currently acting as designated router on the segment, and tmnxPimSnpgGenHoldTime reveals the configured neighbor timeout used to detect DR failure.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using tmnxPimSnpgGrpSrcStatsFwdedPkts OID:

Select a Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR / 7210 SAS SROS switch or router (PIM snooping DR election/status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type tmnxPimSnpgGrpSrcStatsFwdedPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The value of tmnxPimSnpgGrpSrcStatsFwdedPkts indicates the number of multicast packets that were forwarded to the interfaces in the outgoing interface list. tmnxPimSnpgGrpSrcIfTable lists all the interfaces in the outgoing interface list. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
